Dear Mr. President Elect,
The past eight years have been marked by a series of crimes eminating from the Bush White House. Those include, most grievously, war crimes. The invasion of a soveriegn nation in direct violation of the UN charter is a war crime. Torturing detainees is a war crime. Indefinite detention is a war crime. The use of mercenaries on the battlefield is a war crime. The administration does not even deny their involvement in these activities.
By their own words, there can be NO DOUBT that this administration is filled with war criminals. That does not even touch on warantless wiretapping of American citizens in violation of clear Federal FISA statutes. That does not get into the illegal firing of US attorneys for political purposes. That does not get into a lot of Bush administration criminality. Those are just the worst of the crimes committed by this administration.
It was Bush’s duty to protect the nation without breaking the law. They failed to do so.
It is your DUTY to persue full investigation and prosecution of these crimes. If you fail to do so, you become an accomplice to these crimes, just part of the cover-up. While I have been a strong supporter of your bid to get your new job, I tell you right now that if you sweep these crimes under the rug in your drive to “look forward, not backward”, I will never vote for you again.
War crime MUST always be prosecuted. If we will not hold Americans accountable for such crimes, what does that say to the world? As an American citizen and as someone that cares deeply about justice, I DEMAND that you investigate these crimes and prosecute those responsible.
If you put your hand on the Lincoln Bible and take that oath, your job starts there.
